Hello, my name is Dr. Melissa.
For over nine years, I have been dedicated to supporting students in mathematics, chemistry, and physics. I tutor because I am passionate about helping students grow—not only in their academic abilities but also in their self-confidence, resilience, and problem-solving skills,
which are essential for success both in school and in life.
Math and science require students to embrace challenges: to learn through failure, to work through problems with no immediate answers, and to persist through complex and difficult tasks. While this can feel overwhelming at first, developing strategies to approach these challenges builds confidence and cultivates life skills that are invaluable in today’s world.
How are tutoring sessions organized?
During each tutoring session, I focus not only on the material the student brings but also on identifying and addressing any underlying knowledge gaps. In addition, I work closely with students to develop personalized test-taking and problem-solving strategies that suit their individual learning styles. When needed, we also focus on building effective note-taking techniques and organizational skills to support their overall academic success.
What teaching strategies do I use?
I do not take a one-size-fits-all approach to teaching. While the core material remains consistent, each student is unique and benefits from individualized instruction. I strive to let the student guide each session based on their goals and needs, then tailor my teaching accordingly. I also understand the challenges that traditional classroom learning can present—particularly for students with learning differences such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia—and I work to create a supportive and adaptive learning environment that meets them where they are.
What do I expect from my students?
I expect students to come prepared with homework, questions, or concepts they’re struggling with. I encourage effort and persistence, and I believe mistakes are valuable learning opportunities—not something to be ashamed of.
My goal is to foster a supportive environment where students feel safe to try, fail, and grow.
I do not do homework for students or simply provide answers. Instead, I guide them in developing a deeper understanding. For schools with pledged homework policies, I respect those boundaries while still helping students grasp the underlying concepts. Reviewing tests and quizzes is also a key part of our work—celebrating successes and learning from missteps.
Encouraging students to study consistently.
As long as I have seen the student twice during the month; they can text me anytime they have a question on homework (I am usually in bed by 11pm). My goal in this is to have them “Try, struggle, but before you get frustrated, text me.” Often, we can avoid frustration and enhance learning thru a quick communication.
Final exams.
While I do help students study for midterm and final exams, tutoring the week before an exam is not a substitute for consistent semester-long tutoring and preparation. I can NOT teach an entire semester or year's worth of material in 1-2 study sessions. To this end, when it comes time for mid-terms and finals, scheduling priority is given to those who have worked with me the longest.
As for my background,
I have a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from MCV-VCU and a BS in chemistry, I Graduated Magna Cum Laude in both degrees. I work in the community as a pharmacist part time. I have also done ‘long-term’ substitute teaching at both St. Christopher’s and St. Catherines in math and chemistry.
Most of my business is by referral from former students, which is the highest compliment.
I look forward to working with you and your child!
